Mr. Perez is an experienced intellectual property attorney who has handled a wide-range of matters for clients of all sizes, from large multi-national corporations to small start-up companies. He advises clients on issues including patents, trademarks, trade secrets, and transactional matters. He has represented clients in federal district court and has significant trial experience. Mr. Perez also represents clients in front of the United States Patent & Trademark Office, including patent prosecution and inter partes review (“IPR”) proceedings.

Mr. Perez has experience handling all stages of complex litigation in federal district court, including pre-filing due diligence, discovery, taking and defending depositions, working with experts, claim construction, motions practice, and trial. He has represented both plaintiffs and defendants in courts including: the District of Delaware, the Eastern District of Texas, the District of Maryland, the Northern District of California, and the International Trade Commission.

Mr. Perez also uses his experience to assist clients with protecting and maximizing the value of their intellectual property assets. For example, Mr. Perez has advised clients on the divestiture and acquisition of strategic patent portfolios. He has also helped clients to perform internal audits regarding the protection of their trade secrets and other intellectual property.

Mr. Perez began his career as a Patent Examiner at the United States Patent & Trademark Office, where he examined patents in a range of advanced technologies including computer networking, artificial intelligence, computer simulation, and control systems. While attending law school, Mr. Perez served as an editor on the Harvard Journal of Law and Technology (JOLT). Mr. Perez subsequently spent seven years working on high-stakes intellectual property matters at top international law firms.

REPRESENTATIVE MATTERS

  • Finjan v. Symantec Corp., et al. (District of Delaware) – Developed litigation strategy resulting in complete victory for Symantec in a case implicating all of Symantec’s anti-virus products. The jury concluded that both asserted patents were invalid and not infringed.
  • Symantec Corp. v. Acronis, Inc. (N.D. California) – Represented Symantec in lawsuit against Acronis, which was accused of infringing Symantec’s patents related to backup and recovery technology.
  • Paice LLC, et al. v. Ford Motor Co. (District of Maryland) – Represented Ford in lawsuit involving Ford’s hybrid electric vehicle technologies. Wrote successful motion to stay the case pending inter partes review.
  • InterDigital Communications, Inc. v. ZTE Corp. (District of Delaware) – Successfully represented patentee in a case involving 3G wireless technologies. At trial, the jury concluded that the asserted patents were valid and infringed.
  • Motorola Mobility, Inc. v. Apple Inc., In the Matter of Certain Wireless Communication Devices (International Trade Commission) – Represented Motorola Mobility in litigation against Apple Inc. involving mobile devices, including Apple’s iPhone products.
